Pallium - Plenitude of the Pontifical Office

Pallium - Plenitude of the Pontifical office

After the prayers Super electum Pontificem, the senior cardinal deacon placed the pallium on Popes shoulders saying:

Accipe pallium, scilicet plenitudinis
Romanae Ecclesiae
Accept the pallium, representing the plenitude of the Pontifical office, to the honour of Almighty God, and the most glorious Virgin Mary, his Mother, and the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and the Holy Roman Church

Oratio Super Electum Pontificem

After the Confiteor, the pope was seated on the sedia gestatoria, which was resting on the ground, and the three senior cardinal bishops approached him wearing mitres. Each in turn placed his hands above him and said the prayer, Super electum Pontificem (over the elected pope).
First the Cardinal Bishop of Albano said:

God, who are present without distinction whenever the devout mind invokes you, be present, we ask you, we and this your servant, N, who to the summit of the apostolic community has been chosen as the judge of your people, infuse with the highest blessings that he experience your gift who has reached this point.

Then the Cardinal Bishop of Porto said:

Supplicationibus, omnipotens Deus, effectum consuetae pietatis impende, et gratia Spiritus Sancti hunc famulum tuum Franciscum perfunde; ut qui in capite ecclesiarum nostrae servitutis mysterio constituitur, tuae virtutis soliditate roboretur.

We supplicate you, Almighty God, effect your customary devotion and pour out on this your servant, N, the grace of the Holy Spirit that he who is constituted at the head of our church as the servant of the mystery, you would strengthen with the fullness of virtue.

Finally the Cardinal Bishop of Ostia said:

Deus qui Apostolum tuum Petrum inter caeteros coapostolos primatum tenere voluisti, eique universae Christianitatis molem superimpostuisti; respice propitius quaesumus hunc famulum tuum Franciscum quem de humili cathedra violenter sublimatum in thronum eiusdem apostolorum principis sublimamus: ut sicut profectibus tantae dignitatis augetur, ita virtutum meritis cumuletur; quatenus ecclesiasticae universitatis onus, te adiuvante, digne ferat, et a te qui es beatitudo tuorum meritam vicem recipiat.

God, who willed your Apostle Peter to hold first place in the inner fellowship of the apostles, that universal Christianity overcome evil, look propitiously we ask on this your servant, N, who from a humble position has suddenly been enthroned with the apostles on this same principal sublimity, that just as he has been raised to this exalted dignity, so may he likewise merit to accumulate virtue; in bearing the burden of the universal church, help him, make him worthy and for thee who are blessed may merits replace vices.

Sic transit gloria mundi

Three times the procession was stopped, while proceeding to the altar, and a bundle of flax lashed to a gilded staff was burnt before the newly elected pontiff, while a master of ceremonies said:

Pater Sancte, sic transit gloria mundi.

Holy Father, thus passes the glory of the world.

as a symbolic caution to set aside materialism and vanity.

Coronation Rite of The Pope

In recent days we observed the inauguration rite of the new Pontiff in Vatican. Because the liturgy was much simplified, it is good for us to study the full catholic coronation rite of Roman Pontiff, since for us Catholics the liturgy has also the educational dimension, from which we must not abstain.

Have a look on the full rite of coronation of the Pope and learn from the rich prayers and symbols and understand what the Holy Mother Church wants to tell you, who the Pope is and how sublime and important his role is.

Church consecration by Cardinal Ratzinger in 1979

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, archbishop of the diocese Munich and Freising, the later pope Benedict XVI, consecrated 1979 the church Maria Queen in Baldham. The movie is made by Martin Grzonka from Baldham.

Note the elements of the traditional rite of church consecration: knocking the main doors with the cross, writing Greek and Latin alphabet on the church floor.

I know, this are famous 1970'that had bad impact on the holy liturgy, and which we all want to forget, but though you see the grains of traditional approach of our Pope Emeritus  towards the liturgy.

B.M.V. Claromontanae seu Czestochoviensis - August 26

Today (Sunday, August 26) we in Poland had a privilege to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Czestochowa with the commemoration of the 13th sunday after Pentecost. The Roman Missal for the dioceses of the Kingdom of Poland has its own mass for this day:

Introit Ps 86,1-2.3
Fundamenta eius in montibus sanctis: diligit Dominus portas Sion super omnia tabernacula Iacob.
Gloriosa dicta sunt de te, civitas Dei.
V. Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculórum. Amen.
Fundamenta eius in montibus sanctis: diligit Dominus portas Sion super omnia tabernacula Iacob.

Collect

Prov 8, 17-24, 32-35
Ego diligentes me diligo; et, qui mane vigilant ad  me, invenient me. Beatus homo, qui audit me
Qui me invenerit, inveniet vitam et hauriet salutem a Domino.

Graduale and Alleluia

Communion Ps. 86, 32
