Traditional Latin Mass filmed on Easter Sunday in 1941 at Our Lady of Sorrows church in Chicago. The film presents the ceremonies of the Missa Solemnis or Solemn High Mass in full detail with narration by then Mgr. Fulton J. Sheen.

Miserere Mei, Deus

 

Miserere mei, Deus, Latin for "Have mercy on me, O God" by Italian composer Father Gregorio Allegri. This piece for was composed for exclusive use in the Sistine Chapel as part of the Tenebrae office on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday Ceremonies Explanation

HERE you may find the explanation of the Palm Sunday taken from "The Liturgical Year" by Dom Prosper Guéranger.

 

 From the pre-1955 rite:

Petimus, Domine sancte, Pater omnipotens, aeterne Deus: ut hanc creaturam olivae, quam ex ligni materia prodire jussisti, quamque columba rediens ad arcam, proprio pertulit ore: benedicere et sanctificare digneris: ut quicumque ex ea receperint, accipiant sibi protectionem animae et corporis, fiatque, Domine, nostrae salutis remedium, tuae gratiae sacramentum. Per Dominum nostrum.
R. Amen.

We beseech thee, O holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God, that thou wouldst be pleased to bless and sanctify this creature of the olive tree, which thou madest to shoot out of the substance of the wood, and which the dove, returning to the ark, brought in its bill; that whoever receiveth it, may find protection of soul and body, and that it may prove, O Lord, a saving remedy, and a sacred sign of thy grace. Through, &c.

Collect of the Coronation Mass

After the Gloria in excelsis and the Pax vobis, the pope said the Collect for the day and then secretly a prayer for himself:

Deus omnium fidelium pastor et rector, me famulum tuum, quem pastorem Ecclesiae tuae praeesse voluisti, propitius respice: da mihi, quaesumus, verbo et exemplo, quibus praeest, proficere; ut ad vitam, una cum grege sibi credito, perveniam sempiternam. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

O God, the Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, mercifully look upon me, Thy servant, whom Thou hast chosen as the chief Shepherd to reside over Thy Church; grant me, we beseech Thee, so to edify, both by word and example, those over whom I hath charge, that I may attain unto everlasting life, together with the flock committed unto me. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Papal Mantum - Papatu Romano

The mantum or papal mantle differs little from an ordinary cope except that it is somewhat longer, and is fastened in the front by an elaborate morse. In earlier centuries it was red in color; red, at the time being the papal color rather than white. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the immantatio, or bestowal of the mantum on the newly elected pope, was regarded as specially symbolical of investiture with papal authority: 

Investio te de papatu romano ut praesis urbi et orbi,

I invest you with the Roman papacy, that you may rule over the city and the world

were the words used in conferring it at the Papal Coronation.

This ceremony was no longer used in 20th Century Papal Coronations. However, the mantum  is still in use occasionally.
